Kissing the War Goodbye

The photo I chose from Life Magazine was "Kissing the War Goodbye". It is the photo was taken after World War 2 was over, also known as V-J Day. It took place on August 14, 1945. My first response when seeing this photo is the passion and affection shown in the strangers actions. Not many people know that the nurse and the sailor were complete strangers, and were just sharing this special time together. This photo really caught my eye because they look so happy and its a perfect pose. I can feel the happiness and joy between the two. I strongly see the rhetorical device, pathos, illustrated in this photo because of the emotions that are involved in it. The two look very happy that the war is over and that appeals to pathos. This picture was picked for the cover of Life Magazine because the war was over and the joy was spreading throughout the country. It was a moment in time, because even the people in the background are all smiling and happy at this particular moment. It was a joyous moment for the whole country. This picture portrays the joy that the sailors felt when the war was over. It can also show a sign of victory and relief that the war is over.

Many talk shows in China introduce this “kissing the war goodbye”, and some of them called it “the century kiss”. It’s very famous for their poses and the special location. There was a newspaper said this photo is not took in an occasional situation, and the couple is not the real soldier and nurse, they are the models.

I really like this picture, and I agree with you that they are overly joyed by the war being over. It is a classic picture taken at the perfect moment. It looks like it was planned to look like that, but it really wasn't.

I've heard about this picture before. The classicness of this picture is undenialbe. I don't know the truth but there are lots of questions and comments to the authenticity of this picture. No matter what people say, I love this picture. The picture's perfect. More importantly, The kissing is perfect~

It's interesting to note that the soldier and the nurse did not know each other. He grabbed the first female he saw, lol.

I just learned the other day that these folks were reunited for 50th anniversary of D-Day.

I like the picture. The is kiss is not just about love. It represent the peace and happy. And at China ,when we beaten the Japan, all people celebrate on the stress. They danced to everyone and sang loudly.

I want to thank Amy for finding and sharing this photo to us. I am shocked by the photo. I see many smiling faces. They are so happy because the war is over in the end. I am amazing that the two who are kissing in the photo are strangers. After I knew the information, I was shocked again. From this, I can feel their happiness and their excitement. I could understand them and I am also happy for them. I know all the people in a war want to finish it. Though in the picture people are happy with the end of war, I could still see the sadness of them during the war. Therefore, I hope there would not be another war.

Hi, Amy!
I knew this photo” Kissing the War Goodbye” before. To tell you the truth, I didn’t understand it when I saw it at the first time. At that time I thought this is photo that shows the happiness after the big war. However, I discovered that those two main characters are nurse and soldier. I began to know the further meaning of the photo. It uses the happiest way (kissing) to show the saddest thing (war). Let people know the serious effects of the war and tell people keep away from the War. Hope to have a peace world.

I remember I saw this picture before. It’s cool! Maybe a war has a serious influence. It destroys many families. Many couple couldn’t together. You don’t know whether the soldier is dying. On this picture a soldier is kissing a nurse. It’s real love. As we all know there are many people died during the war. Many people will be injured in the war. There will be true love between soldiers and nurses. Look at this background we can see many people smiling. Say good bye to the war. We all like a peaceful world. If there is no war in the world, the world will be more beauty.

When I saw this photograph, I felt so exciting. I read a lot of books about the World War 2 and I know that it is a terrible disaster. I can get their feeling. When the war finished, even strangers hugged and kissed with each other. It was not only a winning, but also meant peace and happiness.

HI amy!
i understand why they are so happy after war is over. in my country's jostory book, espeacially when i see the amount of death cuased by war, i'm so angry and sad, angry with invaders and sad about deaths. everyone will agree with that humans don't need war at all, although it is happening a lot until now.
