Popular Culture

Popular culture, to me, means a lot of different things. I like to think that popular culture is the type of things the new generation is into or likes to do. Like in todays world things like youtube, facebook, cell phones, and American Idol are things that I would consider pop culture.

My friends and I have been influenced by pop culture. The things that are in style are considered pop culture and I like to be in style. I really like to wear Express and American Eagle. Also, the big country stars are Tim Mcgraw and Taylor Swift, and naturally I listen to them. My life is easily shaped my pop culture because I am usually into the things that are popular at the time. Movies and reality shows also shape the things me and my friends like. When we see something on television that is cute or cool then usually we are attracted to it and want to buy it.

Things like facebook can shape the way we act too. When we see someones pictures of them doing something that looks like fun, it could become a trend. Also, there are pictures and can show different styles and ways of life.

Popular culture, in my generation, just means things that are desired or media that is popular at the time. It could mean different things to different people. Not everyone is interested in the same thing, which means that there are many different aspects that are considered popular culture.

I read your blog and it's interesting. I noticed that you included reality tv and contest shows like American Idol. This really caught my attention because I watch a lot of reality, but I never thought of it as pop culture, I just took it as a good laugh. Now I have always wanted to bee on a reality show, just because it seems to be unreal. I just can't understand why anyone would wnat to shape there life around a reality show?!?, not saying that you do.

I read your blog and you are right about the things you said. Most young people are affect by pop culture because of such things like myspace and facebook. Everyone wants to be cool so they do the things that they think makes them cool. Young people was try to model their life on what they see on TV.

I'm amazed by the number of people hooked on reality shows. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but because I feel SO out of touch when I do not know what is going on. Reality shows are one aspect of pop culture about which I am utterly at a loss.

But I would pose this question to you, Amy. What do you think brought about the reality shows? What in our own culture makes them so popular?

I feel Amy's blog post regarding popular culture is rather well thought out, and an affirmation that so much is relative to a persons frame of reference. Primarily, her final paragraph sums up my ideas regarding popular culture; "it could mean different things to different people." This is a truism which is unfortunately overlooked for the most part. A person will immediately assume what they're into is the norm, or what is to be aspired to, and that's simply not the case. While many of us regard popular culture as what we are exposed to via mass media devices (which it is, of course), there are also huge "underground" or subcultural followings which could be termed "popular culture," even though they do not receive the attention or support of mass media outlets. I also find it interesting that she intertwines cyberculture as well, as I view it is not only integral to the conversation but a direct realization of... well, of popular cultures popularity.

I guess my response is a little late but after reading about cyber culture and technoculture it is interesting to see that Amy has made a statement similar to the reading on technoculture that the current generation is raised on video games and computers and that to them it is their pop culture. Where as someone from a previous generation may see pop culture changing from when they were young and how there is a development of a cyber culture, that to the new generation its just a norm for them.
